by | Sep 12, 2024 | Acts, New Testament

I. Three Greek Prepositions-Three Dynamics Of Relationship

A. With- para

1. The Holy Spirit is with someone prior to conversion-John 14:15-18
2. The Holy Spirit seeks to communicate to the Unbeliever- John 16:8-11

B. In- en

1. When a person believes in Jesus, the Holy Spirit indwells them- John 20:21, 22
2. 1 Cor. 6:19 19Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
3. Acts 19:1-7- Paul noticed something lacking in the lives of these men.

a. They are called disciples- learners, followers. They had a rudimentary knowledge of Jesus. They were probably in the same stage of spiritual development as Apollos was at the first. They didn’t know that the H. S. had been poured out on the Church.
b. John the Baptist had prophesied that the Holy Spirit would be poured out. These men didn’t know that that event had happened.
John’s baptism was different than Jesus’ baptism.
c. Matthew 3:11 11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
d. Fire purifies the pure, but destroys the wicked. This baptism would also be a work of purification and power for the Believer.
e. When they understood that Jesus was that Messiah, they were baptized into Christ; into the Mystical Body of Christ; the church.
f. They would go on to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

C. Upon- epi

1. A different dynamic- Acts 1:4-8
2. Baptized with the Holy Spirit-to immerse, submerge, overwhelm.
3. The object which is baptized takes on the nature of that which it is baptized with.

II. Baptism Of The Holy Spirit

A. The Purpose

1. Power to live for Jesus-to be a witness- Acts 1:8
2. To be a conduit for Christ.
3. John 7:37-39 37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
4. EX.- A person is baptized in a pool. They are completely submerged. When they get out of the water, they are often hugged by family & friends, who also are then wet with what the person was baptized in.
5. As we are baptized and overwhelmed with the Holy Spirit, we become spiritual drinking fountains, spiritual sponges that bring forth Christ to others.

B. Examples Of Baptism Of Holy Spirit

1. Jesus- Matthew 3:16 The Holy Spirit came down like a dove
2. The Apostles- Acts 2:1-4: as they prayed: sound of wind; tongues of fire
3. The new Christians in Samaria Acts 8:14-17 Apostles laid hands & prayed
4. Paul Acts 9:17 Ananias laid hands on Paul & prayed
5. Cornelius’ Household- Acts 10:44 As Peter spoke, the H.S. fell (epi) upon them.
6. 41 times in Book of Acts- the words Holy Spirit. The church was empowered, led, filled guided by the Holy Spirit. No Book of Acts w/o the presence of the Holy Spirit.
7. We never see the Christians out of control when this happens.
8. Sometimes tongues, prophecy. Always a dynamic change is noticed.

III. Be Filled With The Holy Spirit

A. Not A One Time Event

1. There is an initial filling, but many re-fills. (Free re-fills)
2. Acts 4:8 Peter had been filled at Pentecost. Seems to be filled once again
3. Acts 4:31- Notice: boldness to speak & witness of Jesus.
4. Acts 13:9
5. Acts 13:52
6. Ephesians 5:18 18And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
7. Pleroo– to make full, to fill to the full, to fill to the top
8. Christians have a choice of what they want to be full of.

B. The Christian’s Continued Need To Be Filled W/ H. S.

1. Galatians 3:3 3Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
2. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit. (Don’t suppress the H.S.)
3. Ephesians 4:30 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit. (Don’t bring pain to the H.S.)
