13But as for you, brethren, do not grow weary- to be utterly spiritless, to be wearied out, exhausted, to faint in doing good- to do well, act uprightly
I. Things that would cause someone to grow weary
Verse 1- Like Paul we desire that people would pray for us regarding our ability to share the Word
We desire that the word of God be free to run swiftly and be glorified
To run swiftly means to have free course, to be unhindered, that it would go out effectively and without opposition
Verse 2- There were unreasonable and wicked men hindering Paul’s work.
They were men who were not of the faith, somehow coming against Paul.
Paul asked that they would be delivered (rescued) from these men
Verse 5- Unreasonable, wicked, disorderly people make our hearts want to be directed away from God’s love and from the patience of Christ.
Verses 6-12: These people were disorderly (immoral living, insubordinate to God and Christian morals and leaders), not walking in true Christianity, lazy, unwilling to fulfill their own responsibilities, freeloaders, taking advantage of other peoples kindness and generosity, busybodies,
Verse 6- We may become discouraged about having to separate from some who call themselves Christians.
II. Reasons to push through times of weariness
Verse 1- That the Word of God would run swiftly and be glorified
Verse 2- That unreasonable people would not be the cause of you to grow weary and want to quit.
Verse 3- God is faithful- supreme in authority, that is, (as noun) controller; by implication Mr. (as a respectful title):—God, Lord, master, Sir.
He will establish you- to turn resolutely in a certain direction, steadfastly set, strengthen, and guard you from the wicked one– to watch, that is, be on guard (literally or figuratively); by implication to preserve. obey, avoid:—beware, keep (self), observe, save.
Verse 5- direct your hearts– to straighten fully, that is, (figuratively) direct:—guide, direct into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.
How good it is, after a time of struggling and perhaps wanting to quit, to be directed back to God’s love and Christ’s patience.
How good it is to push past times of weariness and not be defeated by sinful people.
Not be defeated by the discouragement and opposition that can come from others.
Verse 7- Because of and for the sake of others who have pushed through before us.
Verse 9- As we have had our examples, we ought to push forward in order to be an example to others.
Other verses that use this phrase…
Galatians 6:9, 10 9And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
- We continue on because there is reward in the work now, & reward after we are in heaven.
- The reward may take time, but it will come in due season
Luke 18:1 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart
- We battle against growing weary by praying.
- Prayer will direct our hearts back to God’s love, Christ’s patience, and the reminder of reward in due season.
2 Corinthians 4:1, 16 1Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. 16Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
We do not lose heart because…
We remember the mercy that God has had upon us, and we want that word to run swiftly and unhindered to others.
We do not lose heart if we remember that though we are perishing outwardly, we are being renewed inwardly day by day.
We want to communicate that truth to the children.
Ephesians 3:13 Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.
- We don’t lose heart when we see others struggling in their service to God.
Their struggle is for the benefit of others and for us. - God is using their struggle to bring forth His will, His truth, His power into other people’s lives.
- We need to look past the struggles of others and of ourselves, and realize that we struggle for the purpose of God’s glory being manifested to, in, and through other people.
- We ought not to be moved away from serving God because we or others struggle.
Instead, we ought to be thankful that others would struggle for us
